Dr. Riz - Dental Care & Prevention Tips

Hi, I am Riz!

Welcome to my world of teeth and dentistry, where I hope to provide you with a much-needed reality check regarding your teeth, if I may!

LET’S START WITH SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED TO ME RECENTLY...

At home, our water bill has grown steadily over the last few months. Aware of the ongoing inflation situation in the UK, my husband and I hadn’t given it much thought. Nevertheless, following advice from a close friend, we switched our water company to Hive.

One of Hive’s key features is that it can identify leaks and—BRAVO—a leak was found in the cistern of our toilet. Although seemingly small, the leak was costing us an extra 30 pounds ($38) per month, not to mention the water wastage! LESSON LEARNED.

I am sure many of you have had similar experiences across one context or another. The message:

Our lack of knowledge often leads to unexpected expenses!

As a dentist with 20 years of experience, I know that PREVENTION IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN TREATMENT. And yet, day after day, I see preventable problems that require extensive treatment, even for children!

THE SADDEST THING I HEAR AS A DENTIST IS 'IF ONLY I KNEW EARLIER'. AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, THIS FEELS EVEN WORSE WHEN IT COMES FROM A CHILD OR THEIR PARENT, AS PROBLEMS IN CHILDHOOD LEAD TO A LIFETIME OF ISSUES, SO MY AIM IS TO EMPOWER CHILDREN AND PARENTS TO HELP THEM AVOID DAMAGE TO THEIR TEETH WITH 4 SIMPLE STEPS

  1. GOOD ORAL HYGIENE

  2. DIET CONTROL

  3. HABITS CONTROL

  4. DENTISTS HELP IN THE PRESERVATION

I have put together 'The Little Brushers Guide' to help you choose the correct tools needed to achieve good oral hygiene in Children. Get this free guide now by clicking the link below.

       Prevention is our priority

Your oral health, including the well-being of your teeth, gums, bone, and enamel, is of utmost importance to us as dental professionals. Our goal is to minimize the need for extensive procedures by emphasizing preventive measures and providing guidance to help preserve your natural teeth.

However, our primary challenge lies in managing dental chair time efficiently, coupled with a lack of emphasis on dental education among the general public.

While dental hygienists and dentists possess a wealth of knowledge they are eager to impart to their patients, the limited time available for each dental appointment often prioritizes treatment over education, especially given the high hourly rates prevalent in the profession.

I often share this advice with my younger patients:  "Take my suggestion for prevention and put money aside for your own vacation, or don't, and put money down for mine!"

Watching them take my advice seriously after our little pep talk is so rewarding! I maintain a policy of honesty with my patients, readily addressing areas where improvement is needed, such as inadequate brushing habits or poor dietary habits and smoking. Rest assured, my interventions are solely aimed at supporting your oral health and overall well-being.

Let's Do Some Math: Gaining a Better Perspective on Dental Costs

Think about it, If you have a tooth extracted, a single tooth replacement in the UK can cost roughly £3000. That works out to an exorbitant £84,000 for the replacement of all 28 teeth (not counting wisdom teeth).

£3000 x 28 = £84,000

Consider putting this price tag of £84,000 on a watch or a car. How much time and attention would you spend understanding how to look after it? Would you spend 10 minutes every day caring for it?

Please appreciate the gift of your natural teeth. They require care and attention. By dedicating time to perfecting your oral care technique and using the best tools at home, you can reduce pain, save money, and minimize time spent at dental appointments.
