11 Important Dental Facts That Empower You

I know I have repeated some of the points - but in case you missed it last time - ITS SO CRUCIAL!!!

  1. Knowledge gives power: When you know your teeth inside and out, you can take better care of them and decide on the best course of treatment for them when needed. You can also make a smart choice, when you know what to look for in a dentist and how to narrow your search, you can pick the finest dentist for your needs.

  2.  Brushing Is Important:  Taking the time to properly brush your teeth is essential if you want to avoid having fake teeth. It is not easy and is almost trying to clean a 'pie pan' blindfolded but with the right equipment, technique, and time is completely worth it.

  3. Prevention is Key: Proper brushing and a healthy diet may avoid about 80% of dental issues. READ THIS AGAIN.

  4. Effects of Smoking/Vaping: Most of my patients with dentures are smokers /ex-smokers, as people who smoke are more likely to develop gum disease which is the major cause of multiple teeth loss, and the risk is higher depending on family history.  The gums get just as damaged from vaping as they do from smoking, if not more, depending on how often you vape and how young you start.

  5. Take Prompt Action: If you're experiencing pain in your teeth, it might be a sign of nerve involvement and all too late! This could lead to more expensive, extensive, and complex, procedures like extractions or root canals and crowns. Act early, and get a check-up, to avoid it.

  6. Frequency of Checkups: If a person is healthy and cares for their teeth, they usually only need an annual checkup with their dentist and an oral hygiene visit every six months. This is inexpensive compared to all other possibilities.

  7. Invest Wisely: Neglecting oral care and prevention advice, unfortunately, ends up with you saving money for your dentist's vacation or car instead of your own.

  8. Pay Attention to Detail: Avoid subpar dental work at all costs, whether you're in the UK or abroad. Keep in mind that persuasive advertising, like that which you may see in 'Turkey Teeth' or even certain UK dentistry practices, can provide easy solutions. On the other hand, if the job isn't up to basic standards, you could end up with loose teeth from gum disease or teeth that are so small that you need to get them extracted or have root canals done. 'Teeth in a day' is mostly merely a marketing ploy, and operations like crowns or veneers that are done in three hours can have disastrous results if not done correctly.

  9. Composite Bonding, with caution:  It is an irreversible procedure that binds you to lifelong restorative and maintenance work. If this is acceptable for you in terms of cost/time and effort only then embark on this journey and it is not suitable for everyone.

  10.  Teeth Whitening Truth: Effective teeth whitening relies solely on carbamide peroxide, which converts to hydrogen peroxide to whiten enamel. Other products merely eliminate stains or create a visual illusion of whiter teeth. Whitening toothpastes and Charcol toothpastes can be highly abrasive causing tooth wear and damage to the enamel. Avoid falling for deceptive marketing ploys like purple toothpaste, trays with light to activate agents and other gels are strips that could be dangerous. Keep in mind that in the United Kingdom, no one may legally offer dental procedures, including teeth whitening, unless they are on the register maintained by the General Dental Council (GDC).

  11.  Self-Treatment Is Risky:  Marketing from direct aligners from the likes of Smile Direct Club might cause irreversible harm to your teeth. Cosmetic dentistry should only be explored by people with good oral health; otherwise, there is a high risk of injury The self-use of ultrasonic scaler-type equipment can lead to scratching of enamel, and gum recession if done incorrectly / with the wrong pressure and technique. The easier, less time-consuming, less risky option is to remove plaque with an electric toothbrush which calcifies only after 5- 6 days!
