Adult Toothpaste

Question:

Is toothpaste essential for better Oral hygiene ? What are the ingredients that are helpful in toothpastes?

Answer:

As a dentist committed to providing the best oral care advice, I'd like to address the role of toothpaste, or dentifrice, in maintaining oral hygiene. It is important to understand the importance of routine toothbrushing as the most crucial step in reducing plaque accumulation and the risk of plaque-associated diseases like periodontitis and caries.

While toothbrushing itself is key for removing plaque, the role of dentifrices goes beyond just aiding in mechanical cleaning. They are beneficial for stain removal, breath freshening, and providing a feeling of cleanliness. Importantly, fluoride-containing dentifrices play a crucial role in preventing tooth decay and in my opinion teh most important function of toothpast eis to provide flouride to the teeth for repairing all teh remineralisations that happens on the teeth through teh day and through the night.

Recent studies have shown that the mechanical action of the toothbrush is the main factor in plaque removal, and toothbrushing without dentifrice is essentially as effective for plaque removal as brushing with it. However, many people are not effective brushers and live with significant plaque on their teeth. This is where dentifrices with active ingredients can be particularly beneficial. These chemicals can prevent bacterial attachment, stop bacterial division and plaque growth, or may even help remove plaque.

In the context of gingival health, long-term use of dentifrices with active ingredients intended for patients with gingivitis has been associated with the prevention of bacterial biofilm formation. For instance, stannous fluoride or triclosan dentifrices have shown greater effectiveness in reducing gingivitis and plaque than conventional dentifrices. However, it's important to note that these studies primarily focused on plaque removal rather than preventing plaque accumulation.

Current research also suggests that certain dentifrices might reduce overnight plaque regrowth more effectively than regular sodium fluoride dentifrices. This finding points towards the potential added benefits of specific active ingredients in dentifrices for optimizing plaque control, especially in inhibiting overnight plaque regrowth.

Therefore, while the mechanical action of toothbrushing remains fundamental in plaque removal, the use of a dentifrice, particularly those with active ingredients, can provide additional benefits in maintaining oral hygiene and overall dental health.
